Flu vaccines 2021
The 2021 flu vaccines are now available in South Africa and it is more important than ever to protect your health this winter. Last winter, the strict lockdown, improved hygiene habits and social distancing might have played a role in protection against the flu. This year, we are more exposed and should guard us against unnecessary health risks and avoid additional pressure on our health care system.
Flu symptoms can be similar to Covid-19 symptoms, but they are caused by two different viruses. Flu is caused by the influenza virus, Covid-19 by the coronavirus. While the flu vaccine does not protect you against Covid-19, it decreases the risk of severe flu complications.
It is recommended to get vaccinated against the flu, especially for high risk members, such as aging, pregnant or immunocompromised members including members with co-morbidities. Please consult with your GP to consider your individual risk and the right timing of getting the flu vaccine, especially in connection with a possible Covid-19 vaccine in the future.
The flu vaccine and the consultation associated with the flu vaccine are paid from risk (by the Scheme) - one per beneficiary per year, as stated in the Benefit Guide and Scheme Rules.
More information about the Covid-19 vaccines will follow as soon as available.
