Over and above the moral responsibility of business to safeguard the health and wellbeing of employees, we believe there is a strong business case to do so, with a clear and proven relationship between employee health, engagement and productivity.

Raising the profile of health opportunities in business

Discovery plays a leadership role in engaging business in opportunities relating to global health goals. For example, it is working with the Danish pharmaceutical company Novo and with the UN Global Compact on a multi-stakeholder process to promote the use of employee health and wellness metrics in corporate reporting.

Working with other businesses to improve employee health

Discovery works with corporate clients to facilitate improved health outcomes for employees.

Discovery’s US-based subsidiary, The Vitality Group, provides workplace health promotion programmes to corporate clients, with a total membership of close to a million.

In both South Africa and the UK, Discovery engages with corporate clients on workplace health interventions. For example, an annual competition is run in the UK to find Britain’s healthiest company. The competition has raised awareness of this issue in the UK and has led to improved engagement on health in participating businesses.

Improving the health of Discovery’s employees

Discovery has over 11 800 employees globally and invests substantially in initiatives targeting improvements in the health and wellbeing of its employees.

We want to play a deliberate role in supporting the wellbeing of employees through awareness, education and tools that assist with decision making and behaviour to enhance and improve holistic wellness.

Our desired outcome is for our employees to be among the healthiest in our peer group. Our efforts so far have been largely focused in South Africa, where we aim to lead the Health Company Index – a benchmark index of holistic employee health.
